Configuring Hotmail.com.au for an iPad/iPhone
With this post I will explain setting up Hotmail.com.au using IMAP and SMTP in an easy to follow way...
First, a few words about Hotmail.com.au
Outlook.com is a personal information manager web app from Microsoft consisting of webmail, calendaring, contacts, and tasks services. Founded in 1996 by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith as Hotmail, it was acquired by Microsoft in 1997 for an estimated $400 million and relaunched as MSN Hotmail, later rebranded to Windows Live Hotmail as part of the Windows Live suite of products. Microsoft phased out Hotmail in October 2011, relaunching the service as Outlook.com in 2012. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlook.com
Setting up Hotmail.com.au
It is possible that the Mail app will find your settings automatically then set up your account. Apply these steps in order to see if that will be possible:
- Go to Settings > Mail and click Accounts.
- Tap Add Account > Other then click Add Mail Account.
- Type in your name, your email address, your password and a description for account
- Click Next. The Mail app should try to find the email settings and set up your account. If Mail finds the email parameter, tap Done to complete your account setup.
In case the Mail app couldn't automatically set up your account, then you will need to enter them yourself. I think you may find the following table useful:
Settings Needed for Receiving E-mail with IMAP
Server Hostname | imap-mail.outlook.com |
Server Port | 993 |
Username | Your username (do not include the part after the @ sign) |
Authentication | Password |
SSL/TLS | Yes |
Settings Needed for Sending E-mail (via SMTP)
Server Hostname | smtp-mail.outlook.com |
Server Port | 587 |
Username | Your username (do not include the part after the @ sign) |
Authentication | Password |
SSL/TLS | Yes |
Tap Next, then follow these steps:
- Select IMAP or POP If you don't know which one to select, contact Hotmail.com.au
- Type in the details (You may refer to the table above) for Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server. Then tap Next
- If your e-mail settings are correct, click Save to complete . If your mail configuration is incorrect, you'll be asked to edit the configuration.
- If you still are not able to set up the e-mail account, or save the settings, contact your e-mail provider.
